Salt-glazed stoneware lion, the base impressed R. Cobb, c.1830
Produced during the first half of the nineteenth century, this charming lion belongs to the long tradition of English salt glazing. Figures such as this were made in the pottery districts of the East Midlands and made by hand rather than moulded to exact uniformity, so each example possesses its own individual character. Part vernacular sculpture, part domestic ornament, and a surviving fragment of England’s rich ceramic tradition.
